BRAT Juniors – September action!
September has been a busy month for Open Events, and a number of Junior BRATS have made the most of the opportunity for some end of season action. U15 Morgan Hill was the only BRAT at Charnwood on 9th where he ran a PB in the 3000m with a time of 10.32mins – 15secs faster than his time from June 2019.
Leamington on 12th saw Innes Villalobos-Finigan venture out as her 1st year as an U17 to try the 400m where she achieved a time of 70.3 secs. Morgan Hill secured a SB in the 1500m with 4.55mins, V40 James Colclough achieved his 2nd fastest 400m this season with 53.8 secs and V35 Abayomi Adedimeji completed the 1500m in 4.40mins.
Unfortunately the following weekend saw the event planned for Rugby on 19th cancelled due to a rise in COVID cases, but a number of athletes were able to attend the open in Sutton Coldfield. It was Mustopha and Noor Bailey’s 1st open event, having only competed in the Sportshall prior, so they had the virtue of scoring a PB in every event! They took part in a Quadrathon along with fellow U11 Erin McDaid, which consisted of a 75m, a Long Jump, a Howler and a killer 600m to finish. Erin McDaid improved on her Long Jump by 13cm to jump 3.32m, and along with solid performances in the other three events finished in an excellent 2nd place overall! Well done to our young multi-eventers!
U11 Josh Taylor had a SB in the 600m with a time of 2.09mins and also took part in the howler. U15’s Lily and May Smith were both in the 100m with Lily being tantalisingly close to her PB in the Long Jump with a jump of 4.99m! Jamie Callaghan did the discus and threw the 4kg shot for the 1st time since January, improving by 1.29m for a distance of 7.45m.
Also on 19th Alba Smith-Pena took part in the West Midlands Triathlon Series in her 1st duathlon – the Darley Moor Junior Duathlon – which consisted of a 1.6k run, a 5k bike ride and a 600m run. She kept a smile on her face the whole way through finishing 9th overall in a combined time of 24.17mins.
The following day was another Midland Open in Nuneaton, with 9 juniors taking part. An early start for Lily and May in the 100m, with May going on to achieve a PB in the 200m, improving on her time by 0.31secs. U15 William Walker did the 200m for the 1st time and secured a PB of 28.10secs and improved on his 800m time by 11secs, completing it in a time of 2.15mins. U15 Jamie Keene was also in action in the 800m, and improved on his PB by 4 secs with a time of 2.10mins – just 3.54secs off the BRAT record which was set back in 1997!! Watch this space as he has another year ahead of him as an U15 to try and break the record! U13 Samuel Vaughan did the 800m for the 1st time and achieved a PB of 2.55mins, and he then went on to improve on his Long Jump PB by 23cms by jumping 3.07m. U15 Lara Stevens was also in action in the 800m and ran a SB, just 0.11secs off of her PB.
It was U13 Niklas Van Mourik’s 1st outing this year in the 1500m, which he ran 18 secs faster than June 2019 in a time of 5.10 to obtain a PB, and he also equalled his Long Jump PB with a distance of 3.37m. Morgan Hill was back in action in the 1500m where he achieved a SB of 4.52mins – 3 seconds faster than the previous weekend. Jamie Callaghan has only been learning the rotational hammer footwork for a few weeks, but had a bash with the 4kg and threw a PB distance of 17.42m.
Seniors Christopher Burrows and Henry Brocklehurst ran the 3000m, with Henry running a SB of 8.40mins and Christopher a PB of 10.09mins which was 35 secs faster than his previous time! Abayomi Adedimeji was also in the 3000m and ran a time of 9.43mins.
Hopefully next season will see more events being able to take place throughout the year so even more BRATS can showcase their amazing achievements. Well done all!!
