Welcome to the Swimming Page!

BRAT Coached Pool Swimming

Each week we have many coached sessions from 4 different venues across the region. Our coaches will aim to improve your technique and endurance through individual stroke corrections and/or group instruction with a programme of drills and training sets. BRAT members are welcome to attend any of the sessions in any of the regions and the geographic split is only done to help members find the pool closest to them.

Please check the Training Timetable page for specific sessions and information on that page supercedes any session times presented here.

All sessions cost £4 for adults, except where otherwise indicated.

How do I know which ability lane I should be in?

Swimmers will be organised into lanes depending on their ability. To help you decide which level you are at, below is an approximate guide:

Beginner

If you've never swum before, you may be better suited to specific swim lessons, rather than BRAT coached sessions.

Novice

Can swim 50-100m freestyle repeatedly for a minimum of 1500m in an hour session

Intermediate

Can swim around 2000m to 2500m in an hour session

Advanced

Can swim 3000m plus in an hour session

What will be expected of me when I attend a swimming session?

To help improve the quality of the training you will receive, please read the full Swim Guidelines before attending your next session, briefly summarised as:

  • Swimmers must not draft unless specifically asked to do so by the coach.
  • All swimmers must start their repetition 5 seconds after the swimmer in front of them.
  • If a swimmer catches up with the swimmer in front of them and the 5 second gap is closed, then the order of swimmers should be changed so that the faster swimmer takes the lead. If you don’t wish to go in front, swim slower (swimming slowly is a key skill!)
  • Touching feet is a request to overtake. The swimmer in front should allow the swimmer behind to overtake, by stopping at the end of the length, then re-joining the set at the next available gap.
  • When finishing a repetition, leading swimmers should move to one side to leave the lane clear so that following swimmers can swim to the wall.
  • Swimmers must take the amount of rest that is set between repetitions by the session coach, and no more (Less chatting!)

Open Water Swimming. You must read the Bittel Good Practice Guidelines before your first session.

BRAT open-water swimming is not coached. However, there will be lifeguards, a safety boat, and several spotters to ensure your safety.

At Bittel, an 800m (ish) route is marked out by yellow buoys. Experienced swimmers should follow this route. For Novice open-water swimmers, a short practice area is available. For any advice at any time, speak to one of the volunteers.

All newcomers and novices will need to purchase a BRAT swim hat.
