12 Stage Road Relays report 2011

Well done team mates, a great performance and well deserved 7th place. It may have been a small field with a lot of incomplete teams, but with the exception of Telford all the top teams were there.  Coventry Godiva result is a strange one. After their A team athlete suffered an injury during his leg, the B team were allowed to recruit four of the A team who had not run.

I set targets and everyone (with the exception of me in very small print) beat or matched  their target as the total 4:08:15 reflects (4:10 target for 8th)

Nothing like a close battle for motivation. Richard White beating Ed Banks  by a massive1sec, Chris A pipping Jon T by 4 secs, and Andy K identical toSteve C with me trailing 2 seconds behind (wind must have got up). Thanks to Jack who was advised not to compete in English Schools XC yesterday, but turned out for us in 15.21, despite taking it steady he suffered pain most of the way but still gained 40 secs which put us in touch with Staffs Moorlands. Mark Ince was clearly battling to close the 24 sec gap, but both were evenly matched. Staffs and ourselves were safe in our positions, way behind 5th and way ahead of 8th.  Martin Matthews had been suffering with a cold and so ran a short leg in a very respectable time. Steve T making his A team debut did not disappoint running within 5 ses of a tough target. What a run by Paul T, just missing the medals finishing 4th fastest short leg in a fantastic 14m31s.

Well done to all in the B team having been messed about by me in juggling the teams.    I hope all the new boys enjoyed the experience. Particular thanks to Chris G who after doing the first long leg warmed down alongside the phantom last leg runner Steve Hewett  to complete 8.4 miles ! Unfortunately names I definitely entered were not shown on the declaration sheets, at which point it is impractical to request changes. Apologies to all the names used without their permission, but quick action was required.

Thanks to all supporters and cake makers who created a good spirit and motivating loud noise up the finishing straight.

WILL EVERONE please let me know their availability for The National on 9 April, Britain’s premier road race. Same place. Only one team can be entered, but everyone reply regardless of your time and I will sort the fastest team out.
