Opening Scene:
Brats banners fluttering in the breeze at the National Watersports Centre. BRATs begin to arrive bright eyed, (but sleep deprived) ready to take on the challenges of the annual Club Relays!
Scene 1: Mixed and Open Teams
Despite some last minute shuffling of team members, The Great BRATsby, The Good the BRAT and the Ugly, BRATurday night fever, The BRAT pack, Love BRATually, BRATllestar Galactica (Mixed A Team) and Return of the Ginger BRATmen were all ready for the opening race.
With the usual chaotic start, arms swinging, legs kicking and trying not to panic in the washing machine effect of the opening minutes, all teams were soon up and out of the water and onto the bikes.
With the constantly changing weather (pretty much every five minutes) the teams faced blustery winds, lashing rain and baking sun all throughout the bike leg. As always, lots if discussions regarding layering / gloves / coats / gilets resulted in a mix of "costumes" worn on the course!
The run brought a chance for the cheerleaders to "get their pop poms out" and really showcase the exceptional support and encouragement for which the BRAT club is known!
Scene 2: Women's Teams and Open
Despite only having one BRAT women's team entered, BRAT Beauty showed their pedigree, absolutely destroying the competition. The team (despite having to change from Club to Open category) produced a fantastic 1st in category and 4th overall, starting well up the field after the swim and continuing to move through the competition. A great end to the first day!
Scene 3: Mens and Open
BRAT to the Future (Mens Vet 50+) and BrokeBRAT Mountain faced far more favourable conditions on Sunday, with the forecast sunshine actually emerging. The teams both pushed hard throughout all the legs, and constant placing updates provided by BRAT spectators proved worthwhile as the Men's Vets 50+ took home Gold! A great result to finish off the weekend.
Closing Credits: BBQ at the Hirsch's
Many thanks to all the spectators, organisers, cake makers, cheerleaders and competitors who made it a great weekend as well as Mark and Chris Hirsch for hosting the closing night BBQ!
