2017 has officially kicked off! Back to Leamington, this time with the ditch for the Warwickshire County Champs.

BRAT put out both a strong seniors and masters team, and had an additional runner in the Worcestershire champs. The two lap course offered some difficult muddy terrain and of course the infamous ditch, but that didn’t stop 9 hardy BRAT ladies donning their spikes and accepting the challenge. It was all smiles and laughter on the start line, then once the gun went game faces were on! Anne Kenchington had the run of her life to secure herself the title of Warwickshire County Champion, she was followed in by Helena Eastham who again had a tremendous run to gain herself the Warwickshire Bronze Medal. Molly Browne followed closely with a 2nd place in the Worcestershire race. It was a flurry of BRAT vests thereafter with Sarah Hinksman in next to be the first Masters Women home in an impressive 9th place. Eloise Lee despite an awful chest infection took one for the team and with a gutsy run for a 17th place finish put BRAT in silver medal position in the team standings. Helen Pike had a fab run for 17th masters women and Cat Bone returned to racing with a bang in 32nd putting BRAT masters in a brilliant 7th place overall. Claire Jackson and Catherine McNicholl had great runs in the tough conditions to finish a fantastic 41st and 51st.

The atmosphere was brilliant, with loads of family and friends supporting. It was great having the Men’s race straight afterwards, plenty of BRATs to cheer us on and great fun cheering all of the men once we had finished. Next race is the Women’s League in Wolverhampton on 14th January, let Eloise and Molly know if you wish to run! No experience needed, and absolutely everyone is welcome – what more could you want from a Saturday afternoon than a run around in some mud!

Ladies Midland XC League - Stratford

Race two of the Midlands XC League saw the BRAT ladies heading to Stratford for a new course. We weren’t sure what lay in store but upon arrival it was clear this was going to be a hilly one. A walk of the course later (where we got out of breath just walking) we concluded this was the hilliest course any of us had ever run. However, it turns out BRAT ladies are pretty swift over a hilly course with the senior team finishing a superb 3rd overall climbing the overall standings. Great runs were had by all, the course was extremely challenging and there were a couple of spectacular falls– both Helen and Jen took a tumble but in true XC spirit got straight back up and chasing down people. BRAT ladies have ended 2016 on an absolute high, and it is exciting to see what happens in the remaining races in 2017! A big thank you to everyone who has raced so far, see you back in the mud after Christmas!

Midland 5 Mile XC Championships

The 2016 champs were held at Bulwell Hall in Nottingham – a new venue! Two BRAT Ladies represented the club taking on a challenging 5 mile course on a rather cold Saturday. With a few steep climbs and ditch to contend with it certainly was a good honest XC course. Molly Browne finished strongly in 5th place, running a fair bit quicker than in the 2015 event. Claire Keene confirmed she is well and truly back in action with a brilliant run to finish 47th outsprinting several runners in the last few meters. It was a shame BRAT couldn’t defend their title, but we will certainly be back in 2017!

Well done to Jack Gray for winning the men's 7 mile race by over a minute!
