Light at the end of the tunnel?

Telford athletics track on Saturday 6th May, saw the first senior league meeting of the 2017 season.

It was also the BRAT teams’ first match back in division three for some seven years, however, given that we have had two relegations in the past three years since the track disappeared, our third place finish on the day bodes well for the season, and hopefully this result, combined with the progress being made on the new track at the university, does provide some light at the end of the tunnel.

Considering the usual round of injuries which always seem to coincide with the beginning of the season, we still managed to get out a fairly full squad – including several people making their club debuts; Colin Bailey, Steve Dunsby, Theresa Tandoh and Nikki Lawrence. All of these guys performed extremely well on their first outing.

Remarkably, we had 14 wins on the day; David Lima (100 and 400A), Jack Gray (800B and 1500A), Richard Bayliss (1500B), Dan Robinson (5000A), Colin Bailey (Pole vault B), Jonny Briggs (Discus A), Petra Bediako (200A), Karen Bailey (400 hurdles B), Eloise Lee (1500B), Molly Browne (3000A), Anne Kenchington (3000B) and finally, and my performance of the day – Becky Hair winning her first ever competitive 800 metre race. She led from gun to tape and was 20 plus metres clear of the runner in second place!

The next meeting is at Coventry on Sunday 4th June. Can I please ask everyone to make themselves available for selection and let me know as soon as possible – onwards and upwards as they say!

PBs tumble at Telford 10K

The Telford 10K offers runners an excellent opportunity to finish the season with a strong time before the inevitable weight gain brought on by the festive period... This race traditionally has a very strong field, fast course, and a professional but friendly organisation made even better this year by the added benefit of chip timing. A 10 finisher strong BRAT delegation put in some amazing performances resulting in no less than 5 PB's and 2 SB's:

30:27 Jack Gray SB

32:44 Mark Ince PB

34:27 Karl Welborn

34:31 Nathan Warren PB

36:39 Peter Blackwell PB

36:58 Thanos Tsolakis SB

38:04 Jort van Mourik PB

39:35 Chris Grimley

40:13 Becky Hair PB

42:04 Mil Milojevic

Full results can be found here and photos can be found here. It's hard to pick among so many good results, but for me the stand-out performers of the day were Mark (pictured) who absolutely smashed the 33 min barrier for the first time, and Nathan who took nearly a minute off his previous best! Well done to all runners & supporters!

New Club Record!

Jack Gray broke a long standing club record yesterday at the Telford 10k.

The previous record dated back to the pre-BRAT era in 1990 (before Jack was born) and Jack took a huge 27 seconds off it, running 30:03. This was enough for 10th in a very high quality field. Though Jack was agonisingly close to breaking the 30 minute barrier, this was a very impressive performance in Jack's first road race for a long time after an injury lay-off.

No doubt Jack's next goal will be to change the 3 to a 2 and get under half an hour.

Well done Jack!
