BRAT Member photos

The Birmingham Running, Athletics & Triathlon Club (the BRAT Club) welcomes new members from novice to international. We encourage junior participation.

We are an open, friendly, and inclusive club of nearly 500 members, so come along to some training sessions, meet some members and see for yourself.

We have training bases in the north (Sutton Coldfield) and south (Moseley/Selly Oak) of Birmingham.

Athletics and Running: The BRAT Club offers a full range of track & field, cross country and road running disciplines, with coached training sessions and competitions at local and national level.  The Athletics contact is Richard Carney.  Athletics information is at www.birminghamrowheath.co.uk

Triathlon: We welcome everyone interested in multisport events such as aquathlon, duathlon and triathlon.  We have a strong track record in supporting novices through to their first triathlon and beyond.  We also do well at top level competition and teams events.

BRAT Club may have 2011 signature triathlon race Southwtr 5/9/2010 21:54
Dear BRATs, We are in negotiations with a triathlon event organiser (Simon at ChaseRace) to have our own BRAT branded triathlon race in 2011 at a new venue close to Lichfield. This is part of our club strategy and will enhance our national profile and reputation as a premier club. Part of our success in negotiating for this race depends on being able to supply volunteers to support the 3 Spires Triathlon on 19th September (i.e. in a couple of weeks time) at the Friary Grange Leisure Centre in Lichfield. At present we have 12 volunteers and we need as many more as possible, aiming for around 30. Volunteers will undertake various tasks, including lane counters, transition marshals, bike/run marshals, drinks station marshals etc. All marshals will receive a marshals refreshment pack (free food), marshals that want to race will be able to race as well as marshal and there will be a marshals social event afterwards at the Hedgehog pub next to the race venue. Please see the thread on the forum in Your Races to register your name as a volunteer - it would be great to know before 11th September so we can give Simon some idea of numbers. This is a big opportunity for the BRAT Club so lets all demonstrate our club spirit by supporting it. I look forward to seeing you there. Cheers, Tauny

Cannon Hill Park warning for Runners Southwtr 5/9/2010 21:32
Dear BRATs, One of our female BRAT members was harrassed when running through Cannon Hill Park on Wednesday between 6 and 7 pm last week. She was running on the park road near the playground (i.e. opposite the redgra area which has been re-layed recently). A group of 15 or so youths were standing across the road and pretended to trip her up as she was running past. One of them laid hands on her - no damage was done, but it was reported to the police and they are treating it seriously. Apparently another girl experienced the same problems on the same afternoon. Club members should be aware of this incident and run safe. Please run in pairs or even groups and report suspicious activities - we want to keep our park safe! Thanks, Tauny.
BRAT Annual Awards event and triathlon nominations Southwtr 5/9/2010 11:24
Dear BRATs, For the first time, the BRAT annual awards ceremonies will be combined this year, with athletics, running and triathlon awards at both junior and senior levels being presented. The details are still being decided, but it will be a modestly priced family event with a date in mid November and the format is likely to be light snack food, a pay as you go bar, a pub-type quiz, and the giving of the awards by a personality connected with sport. Gordon Ainsley is in charge of the athletics awards procedure which is unchanged from previous years. For the Triathlon Annual Awards, Russ Hall (russell_j_hall@hotmail.com) has kindly agreed to coordinate the process. I would be grateful if BRATs could submit their nominations for awards to him by email, together with reasons for nomination. The 2010 categories are: best female triathlon performance, best male triathlon performance, best novice triathletes (female and male), most improved triathletes (female and male), and best long course triathletes (female and male). The junior triathlon awards will be decided by Andy Teagle in collaboration with the junior triathlon coaches. The best running performances and volunteer awards will be decided in conjunction with Gordon this year. Nominations will close at the end of September. In early October, a committee (at present Russ, Duncan Hough, Jon Tune, Lindz Smith, Mark Hirsch, Paul Robertshaw and Tauny Southwood) will vote on who receives the triathlon awards. If you would like to participate in this committee, please also let Russ know by email. Please get busy with those nominations and send them in to Russ.
Memorial Service for Paul D'Urso Southwtr 3/9/2010 23:11
Dear BRATs, there will be a Memorial Service for Paul D'Urso to which any BRATs who knew Paul are invited. It will be held at Cotteridge Church, Pershore Road South, Cotteridge, Birmingham B30 Date: September 25 Time: 2.00 pm - 3.00 pm. Paul's family writes: We welcome everyone who would like to come to the Memorial to give thanks for Paul's life. We have been very well supported by friends and family and that has helped our family so much. There will be tea, coffee and light refreshments afterwards at the church. We do not want anyone to feel under an obligation to attend, however. Love, Nicola, Joe, Peter and Lucy There is a thread in the Members Forum under Your Socials, Parties & Everything Else. Could all attendees please add their names to this list so that I can r.s.v.p. to help the family cater for the refreshments? Thanks, Tauny
Blue-Green Algae near Bittell Res at BGSC Southwtr 2/9/2010 12:58
A warning notice has been placed by British Waterways on Lower Bittell (i.e. the reservoir next to the one we swim in) where there is a surface mat of blue green algae. If the current weather continues, a similar blue-green algae mat at may form on Upper Bittell Reservoir near Barnt Green Sailing Club where we swim. The main health issues of swimming in blue-green algae are skin and eye irritation caused by contact with the mat and toxicity such as abdominal upset (e.g. nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea) if swallowed. On Upper Bittell, the organisms are in relatively low amounts of blue-green algae at the moment and no mat is being formed. Obviously we can't control this, so a blue green mat may develop on the windward side of the reservoir or in other places especially at the margins of the water. The offending organism will almost certainly disappear later in the month (especially if there is restricted sunlight and falling temperatures and wind!). It is a potential problem for swimmers so all need to decide whether or not to swim tonight.

BRAT Volunteers needed for 3 Spires Triathlon! The BRAT Club and ChaseRace are joining forces to put the last triathlon of the 3 Spires series on. The event is on the 19th of September and we need marshals to make the event happen! The event is being held at the Friary Grange Leisure Centre in Lichfield, there is always a big BRAT turnout to this brilliant and friendly event! In total the race needs 33 marshals, from lane counters to bike marshals to run marshals. This is a chance to put something back into the triathlon world by helping a local race organiser. If you want to race and marshal, that can be arranged, more details will follow for those of you that want to do both. There will be a social event in the Hedgehog pub after the event for the marshals (400m from the race venue). This will be a great day out for all marshals, a chance to have a laugh watching other people suffer, a chance to learn a bit about how a race is put together and a chance to have a pint with fellow BRATs after a good day of cheering and shouting! See the thread in the Your Races to register your name! http://www.bratclub.co.uk/members-forum/7-your-races-etc/4823-brat-volunteers-needed-for-3-spires-triathlon.html Many Thanks Russ Hall

Re: junior talent day Slocoach 30/8/2010 11:42
Do they have to be a member of a club? I was wondering if it is worth ciculating to some of the summer tri camp participants?
