Where's the mud?

Midland  XC relays (Men's teams) – Wolverhampton,  22nd October 2016

The men's team had not entered this event since 2013, but there was an appetite for some early season competition this year and we entered 4 teams. On the day there were lots of new faces, plenty of enthusiasm and many pairs of pristine new spikes on show. Conditions for the race were so benign that even after the race the spikes hardly needed cleaning and all of the new faces were still smiling. Don't expect it like this every time guys! Anyway down to results:

Team A

Simon shot out of the blocks and led the race for the first 100m before thinking better of it, in the end he handed over in an impressive 13th place, Toby took on the poison chalice leg, retained his composure and sense of humour to deliver a solid run, Ashley ran strongly and held position with an impressive leg on debut, and finally Jonathan put in a good run to gain a place and anchor the team home in 22nd place out of 64 teams.

Simon Lanckham             13           22:37

Toby Close                        23           25:18

Ashley Fawke                   23           24:33

Jonathan Winkler            22           24:45

Team B

Strong running from Ben set the team up nicely in 36th position on the fast opening leg, and then  Adam, Martin and Huw all ran well to pick up places and finish in 30th. Huw had been selected for leg 2 in Team A but his injury concerns led him to ask to switch to a safer leg just in case.

Ben Beaumont                  36           25:31

Adam Western                  32           25:06

Martin Cleaver                  31           26:28

Huw Jones                          30           24:58

Team C

Matt ran well just holding off the 4th BRAT team on the opening leg burn up to hand over in 44th place. Then Mark, Stuart and Nick, who only arrived from London with 25 minutes to spare, carved their way through the field to finish 32nd.

Matt Gresty                       44           26:05

Mark Connell                     38           25:56

Stuart Male                        35           26:14

Nick Forrest                       32           25:33

Team D

Andy hung on to Matt the whole way round, and kept us near lots of teams just ahead, so that Rob in his first XC race could pick up 6 places with the fastest run in this team. Ming and yours truly kept the good work going and we finished 33rd.

Andy Piddington              45           26:10

Rob Dowse                        39           25:55

Ming Nham                        36           26:37

Martin Ludford                  33           26:30

Well done to all who ran, great work guys, and thanks to Jort for turning out to support. It was a really enjoyable and satisfying afternoon.

Well done also to the women’s team who finished a brilliant 3rd to take the bronze medals in their race.

November is almost upon us, which can mean only one thing – cross country season!

The team travelled to Wolverhampton to take part in the Midland XC Relay Championships. There were plenty of twists and turns and a number of hills in a compact 6.5km course, so there was no easing into the season. BRATs had two teams, however unfortunately our masters’ team was a runner down – but this did not stop us!

Helen Pike led out the masters team with a 5th place finish after a fantastic run (somewhat shorter than her usual ultra-events) and Rachel Brown maintained the top 5 position with a great run on leg two, despite being an incomplete team they were well in the mix of those top places.

The senior team was led out by Eloise Lee, after battling with injury throughout last year it was great to see her back in action. She gave a very gutsy run to put the team in a brilliant position after leg one. Molly Browne was off next, taking the team to 7th position she clocked the third overall fastest time of the day and set Helena Eastham up for the final leg. Helena had an amazing run - claiming the 5th fastest time of the day, she flew around the course bringing the team home in a podium position and securing those bronze medals. What a team effort!

It was a brilliant day, the support from the BRAT team was superb and has generated a great deal of excitement for the XC season. We are in for a treat!

Full Results:
Helen pike 27.38 (5th), Rachel Brown 31.53 (5th)

Eloise Lee 28.46 (14th), Molly Browne 24.32 (7th, 1st Second Leg), Helena Eastham 24.37 (3rd, 1st Third Leg)
